Biographie
Since 2009 Karen Smith Stegen has been senior research fellow at the Bremer Energie Institut. In May 2011 she was appointed Professor of Renewable Energy and Environmental Politics at Jacobs University. The focus of Professor Smith Stegen’s research and teaching will be in the area of energy security, international relations in the field of energy, NIMBY and the DESERTEC project. She will also be engaged in furthering the DESERTEC University Network, in which Jacobs University was one of the first European universities to join. As associate researcher to the Bremer Energie Institut she will continue to further geopolitics as a third area of focus. Prof. Smith Stegen gained extensive experience with geopolitical analysis during her employment with Amoco Corporation, a major U.S. oil and gas company that is now part of BP. While at Amoco, Prof. Smith Stegen researched and analyzed political, economic and commercial issues, particularly for the former Soviet Union, Eastern and Western Europe, the Middle East, South America, and Southeast Asia. Prof. Smith Stegen was also involved in strategy development and participated in teams evaluating the European gas market and entry into the Russian market. For the Russia team, she spent considerable time assessing the geopolitical concerns surrounding the various pipeline routes for transporting Russian and Caspian region resources and conducted field research in Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Turkey.
